Athlete Testing

The Bod Pod

One measure of the effectiveness of an exercise and dietary regimen is in determining its effect on changes in body composition. At GSSI, scientists test body composition using “The Bod Pod,” a device that calculates body composition by measuring the volume of air displaced by an athlete’s body.

Athletes are weighed to determine their body mass (weight) , and then enter the airtight Bod Pod, which calculates the overall volume of the athlete's body based on the difference in air volume before and after the athlete enters the chamber. Using the data gathered from body weight and volume measures, GSSI staff members can then accurately estimate body density, and from those values can determine body composition.
